EPISODE 15: RUSSELL BAKER

Russell Baker, born in Ames, Iowa, grew up with a deep passion for music, performing, and the arts. He discovered dance while pursuing a B.A. in English from Vassar College and later earned his M.F.A. in Ballet Teaching and Choreography from the University of Utah.

Russell's professional dance career spanned a decade with the Kansas City Ballet, where he performed a wide range of roles—principal, soloist, corps de ballet, and character parts—showcasing his versatility and dedication to the craft.

In 2001, Russell attended NDI New Mexico’s teacher training program, Teaching Excellence®. Before relocating to Santa Fe, he taught with the Kansas City Ballet's R.O.A.D. program (Reach Out and Dance). Inspired by NDI New Mexico's mission to use dance to inspire and engage children, Russell moved to New Mexico to share his love of dance and the arts.

He spent two years directing NDI New Mexico’s North Program in the Española Valley, followed by two years leading the Santa Fe Program, where he wrote and directed memorable End-of-the-Year Events, including *Route 66: Legends of the Road* and *Got Jazz!* His commitment and artistic vision led to his appointment as Artistic Director, overseeing teacher training and the artistic quality of NDI New Mexico's statewide programs.

In February 2008, Russell became NDI New Mexico's Executive Director. His leadership blends a strong foundation in the arts with strategic nonprofit management. With over a decade of executive experience, Russell has played a pivotal role in program development and delivery, teacher training, marketing, and fundraising efforts—including managing an annual fund, a capital campaign, and an endowment/planned giving campaign. He also guided facility renovations, ensuring NDI New Mexico's programs have the space and resources to thrive.

Russell firmly believes in the transformative power of the arts, striving to create meaningful, relevant experiences that empower young people to realize their fullest potential.
